rayel talks to himself 20.11.09 11 PM

rayel- When and where were you born?
rayel- 1965 in El Paso, Texas.
rayel- Are you a cowboy?
rayel- No, I’m an Indian.
rayel- Do you do drugs?
rayel- Not anymore.
rayel- Did you go to art school?
rayel- Does it look like it?
rayel- Who are some of your favorite artists?
rayel- Basquiat, Tapies, Dieter Roth. And Tracey Emin, because she doesn’t give a fuck about what people think about her and she tells the truth. She has courage. I can really relate to her. I was abused, spent years in hospitals for drug and alcohol addiction, had depression, attention deficit syndrome and am generally a little crazy. That is part of what makes me who I am and definitely an element of my expression as an artist. Dirty shit, but I don’t need to hide anything.
rayel- How would you describe your art?
rayel- I think it falls into the category of “a four-year old could do that.” Certainly nothing monumental or new. It is like vomiting, only in a good way.
rayel- One last question. Don’t you think it is a bit weird to interview yourself?
rayel- Yeah. But nobody else asked me.

Artist Statement

I am not interested in making beautiful or technically developed paintings. I want to summon the ghosts inside of me.

The one in question is all fully biodegradable material and categorized as “rayel”. rayel hates me. I like rayel. - Peter Gabriel 1974

Don’t look at me. I’m not your kind. I’m rayel. (from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway)
